Is Photography really Art?

Many artists have said  that taking photos is not the same as painting or sculpture. I on the other hand believe art is in the eye of the beholder. Many people have the eye and use a camera as their tool for creating artistic works of art. Not all photographers are artists, you have the portrait photographer good for school photots and weddings but wait a miniute I have seen portraits that are truly works of art and I have seen other work that just does not meet the critera of what I would consider art. I remember an art show a few years ago at one of the local fairs,  yes it was a real show,  that I entered and by the way I was lucky and was awarded best of show and It was a photograph.  Sandy and I were at the opening looking at all the works when I spotted two really nice pieces. They were perfect;  lighting was unbelivable as we were admiring these works of art and I mentioned how good I thought they were; an elderly women overheared our comments and chimed in, my friend took those, she picked up a camera six week ago and has been taking pictures ever since, to make the story short, I doubt that anyone with no training or years of experience could have possiably taken photos with perfect lighting, contrast, and composition; with no awards or mention; the judge must have came to the same conclusion we did , magazine page or calander. Art is seeing and then transfering the compostion to a medium of your choice. What makes art so diversified is the artists, because we all see compostions just a little differently,  and having the ability to transfer the compostion to the medium is what makes one photographer an artist and an other just photos takers.
